It all began on a summer day in 2010, after a lovely bay swim in Avalon. A challenge was casually mentioned to swim all the way around Cedar Island, a marsh island in the north end of Avalon’s back bay. Within minutes, a simple idea turned into an event, complete with t-shirts, escort boats, and an idea to raise money for a charity. The Wounded Warrior Project was chosen as our beneficiary. A few dozen swimmer/friends were called to “test” the idea for 2011 and the inaugural group swam all the way around Cedar Island on a beautiful Sunday in August, while raising over $1,250 for WWP.
Now our little swim has grown! We have had over 1,900 participants swim around Cedar Island. Every year we support those that have served in our military. In 2023, we donated $25,000 to Challenged Athletes Foundation/Operation Rebound Programs. We could not have ouroncredible swims without the support of our generous participants and sponsors, along with the support of the Borough of Avalon, Avalon Yacht Club, Avalon Police, Fire and Rescue escort boats, wave runners, and our volunteer SUP and kayakers.

This 5K Swim starts and finishes at Avalon Yacht Club, and the course is designed to be going with the tide throughout the event. This is now a chipped timed charity event, and we are providing the venue for a fun, challenging and rewarding swim. Our goal is to raise awareness and provide support to our troops and honor members of our country’s military.
In addition to the race, homes along the bay will be out on their docks cheering you. Awards will be presented to the top five male and female, masters and grand masters finishers only.
*There is NO race day registration for this event
This event is limited to 300 participants.
Athlete Check In/Body Marking is at the Avalon Yacht Club RACE DAY ONLY 1:00PM-2:30PM. Swimmers will receive a bag, a comfy Tultex Tee Shirt, custom DeFeet Socks, event CI5KS Swim Cap, branded event finisher’s towel.
