Cedar Island Swim

It all began on a summer day in 2010, after a lovely bay swim in Avalon. A challenge was casually mentioned to swim all the way around Cedar Island, a marsh island in the north end of Avalon’s back bay. Within minutes, a simple idea turned into an event, complete with t-shirts, escort boats, and an idea to raise money for a charity. The Wounded Warrior Project was chosen as our beneficiary. A few dozen swimmer/friends were called to “test” the idea for 2011 and the inaugural group swam all the way around Cedar Island on a beautiful Sunday in August, while raising over $1,250 for WWP.

Now our little swim has grown! We have had over 500 participants swim around Cedar Island. Along with the supporting our local VFW Post #331 Operation Fireside, which sends local recruits home for the holidays, we will be supporting organizations that benefit our military. We will have Avalon Police Fire and Rescue escort boats, wave runners, and kayaks. There will be a significant presence of both active military personnel and veterans. We are having a delicious Tonio’s pizza post swim.

Race Information

Cost: $45 ($55 after 8/1)

This 5K Swim starts and finishes at Avalon Yacht Club, and the course is designed to be going with the tide throughout the event. This is a self-timed charity event, and we are providing the venue for a fun, challenging and rewarding swim. Our goal is to raise awareness and provide support to our troops and honor members of our country’s military.

In addition to the race, homes along the bay will be competing for the titles of “Best Decorated” and “Most Spirited”. The boat support crew will also be collecting donations for our charity partners. Awards will be presented to the top five male and female finishers only.

*There is NO race day registration for this event

This event is limited to 200 participants.

Race packets can be picked up at the Avalon Yacht Club. Racers will receive a Zorrel technical shirt, Custom Defeet socks, and a CI5KS swim cap.

TESTIMONIALS

“It was an amazing event. Both my children swam and they had a blast. Their swim team members came out to support them and now all the swimmers want to try this event next year! Thank you for all you do for Avalon and your charities.

“Thank you for a wonderful afternoon! It was a long way for us from Northern Jersey but so worth it!! I had never been to that area of the Jersey shore and it’s so beautiful (and different!)
The swim was so well-supported and fun, with great people both in and out of the water! I missed the champagne stop, but maybe next year!”
